I have 10.4 (tiger) installed on my Imac. I want to know the procedure for making an image of the installed os so that I can restore the Os when it is corrupted. Is there any specific s/w that I have to use for making the image of the OS? If 'yes' please provide me the URL of the same for downloading the s/w.

Well, there is Disk Utility. It is free, comes with your system, and most importantly is accessible from your installation media.

It is quite a handy tool.

superDuper merely clones every bit of data on a hard drive without thought. i would personally like something like the (very good) System Restore from windows - it saves some very small files, every day, or before an install, and if something buggers up/corrupts the system/the system becomes unstable, the system restore completely reverts the system back to two weeks ago or whatever. is there some third party app that can do that, without creating a 60gb+ size image?

i am not pro in this bro, but i also switched after many years from windows to mac, and as for the system restore, its the worst thing windows could shave done, taking up huge space, and more over the first thing to become corrupt is anything goes wrong in you windows or any virus attacks your windows. its truly unthinkable how you could praise the most ineffective and in efficient thing in windows. it can mere solve your problem, and as per my experience nothing beats Time Machine, offered by mac, which is totally free to use only thing is you need any removable hard disk, with enough space to back up your data, and it can keep records everyday, and you can actually choose in time machine which date you want to restore, instead of restoring everything in your computer like system restore does. go ahead and try it.

Yes Time Machine is good, very good in fact, just too bad it wasn't around 6 years ago when this problem thread was started.

PS: it always pays to check the date of a posting before replying. ;)

Thanks bro, but i thought that its never too late to post an reply, cause when you are searching internet, many people might still wanting to be have a new or updated information on the old ones, cause every now and then new users buy computers and are often confused by such questions. or rather i would suggest that if so old posts are not required maybe they could also be deleted. LOL thanks anyways for replying. have a nice day.
