IMAP in mail.app

is it just me, or does IMAP work terribly in mail.app. i transfered some mails to a different folder, and they all disappeared on the server (and client) except the top mail, which now appears 4 times. the whole thing seems a little all around buggy and unreliable, whereas its POP support seems great. i think i may go back to POP, or better yet, just stick to server side pine. since i can t find any other free mail clients that are worth anything.
 
I get this error very frequently:

IMAP command SELECT failed with status: no additional information available.

it fails to download new mail, or upload changes i ve made to my subscribed folders when i get this message. it happens a lot, but not all the time, so a lot of the time it works fine.

can anyone provide any insight into the problem?

the server is solaris 7, running UW imapd as the IMAP server
