IMAP Mail Backups on MacBook Pro

Hello to all,

I've just tried backing up my IMAP mail on my MacBook Pro via Thunderbird 3.1.7, which seems to have worked fine.

Under my_user_name/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/profile_ID/ImapMail/account_name/ it has created three entries for each of the folders I wanted to back up:

Folder_name
Folder_name.msf
Folder_name.sbd (which seems to contain the mails and attachments)

Once I've run Time Machine and backed this up further, can I safely delete these three entries for each folder without causing any problems with Thunderbird or will this whack my installation in some way?

Also, is there an upper limit on my mail profile that I shouldn't exceed? At the moment, the mail I downloaded for backup purposes is only about 350MB, but will of course grow in future. The old rule of thumb for MS mail was not to let a file get beyond about 1GB/1.3GB or you risked corruption. Any advice that anyone can offer on this for Thunderbird?

Thanks
