iMovie HD-QuickDraw-Quartz-What?

So about a month ago I had fun playing with some HD film I took--cut, added sound, et cetera on iMovie HD.

Today, I decided to play with a clip or two and keep getting crashes. Finally, I checked the Console to find:

3/19/09 12:07:45 AM iMovie HD[486] Warning once: This application, or a library it uses, is using NSQuickDrawView, which has been deprecated. Apps should cease use of QuickDraw and move to Quartz.

"NSQuickDrawView?" "deprecated?" "Quartz?" Must confess I am confused.

As in the signature: 10.5.6, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM.

It appears that Apple is getting rid of QuickDraw, and is saying to replace it with Quartz Extreme. I've researched the error message and I cannot find a solution. Make sure iLife is fully updated (iLife '09 with updates).

Hope this helps :)

I do not have iLife!!1!

Never explored it. I suppose it is somewhere on my installation disk? Or I can just download the free trial?

Did you not use iMovie HD to do the clips? iMovie is part of iLife. If you bought a Mac recently that came with Leopard installed you have iLife '09.

What program are you using to open the HD videos?

It's nothing to worry about. QuickDraw has been deprecated since 10.4, but it's still used because Quartz is still not a fully suitable replacement. When Apple marks something as deprecated, they mean for programmers to begin moving away from it, because years down the line Apple might pull the plug.

The notice is only there to remind programmers that they're being naughty little boys and girls. There's nothing for a user to do or worry about.

Well, I bought it used with the Installation Disks--less than four months used--previous purchaser saw a MacBook Pro and orgasmed, then convinced his company to buy it for him! I have iMovie HD, iPhoto, and others. But when I try to update they recommend I purchase iLife 9, I believe. I never got into a lot of that since I think I have better programs.

It may be that that particular clip is corrupt. iMovie HD "dies" at a particular place. I tried transferring the clip to QuickTime and it "dies."

Good thing I backed up the data. Oddly enough the source clips are on an ExHD--and must have become corrupted somehow. Still have the original burned so while painful, it is recoverable.

So, Mikuro, there is nothing to "do" to prevent that error warning in Console? Other than buying/updating iLife?

I don't think so. And I have no reason to think the new version of iLife is QuickDraw-free, either. (Could be, though. *shrug*)

Interesting that you say the clip is corrupt. If you scroll back you might see similar warnings from the past even with good clips. Or it could be that this is caused by a particular codec used in that file which is no longer fully compatible -- a codec that happens to use QuickDraw.

You might want to poke through your Library/QuickTime folder (in both your HD and home folder libraries) and see what codecs you have installed, and if any need updates or aren't compatible with 10.5.6.

I will do that. I updated them recently based on another thread for stuff that simply were old. On that note:

  • AC3MovieImport.component
    Perian.component

That is from the User --> Library --> QuickTime

When I go from Hard Drive --> Library --> QuickTime:

  • AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    DesktopVideoOut.component
    DivX Decoder.component
    DivX Encoder.component
    FCP Uncompressed 422.component
    Flip4 Mac WMC Advanced.component
    Flip4 Mac WMC Export.component
    Flip4 Mack WMV Import.component
    FLV.component
    LiveType.component
