iMovie: importing and exporting DV clips

I've been through the iMovie help files, and couldn't find any discussion of how to either export a DV clip from an iMovie project to a file, or move a VD clip from one iMovie project to another. It seems that once a clip is imported from the camera, there's no way to get it out of the iMovie project.

It would be nice to have a library of clips that you could use in multiple iMovie projects. Seems like there should be some way to do it…

Hi Eric,

You can do one of two things: (By the way, these instructions are based on iMovie 05)

1) Select a clip and click on Edit ..Copy, then create a new project and paste it in, or
2) A better way would be to click on the Share menu, where you can either export for E-Mail or the web.

If you use the Share option, the clip will get compressed. If you use method #1, it won't. To get the Quicktime file using method #1. Save the new project (once the pasted clip is in the timeline) then close iMovie. Navigate to where you saved the project with your clip pasted in (probably your Movies folder), Ctl click on it (or right mouse button click if you have a two button mouse) and select "Show Contents" from the menu. Somewhere in one of those folders is your quicktime file. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Marc
