iMovie won't run smoothly after copying a part of a project into another project

I made an iMovie project.It worked fine.
Then I copied a part of it into a new project.
Since then both projects won't run smoothly.
The sounds runs ok,but the image runs badly,staggers .
When I click the play button, first appears the "beachbal".
Only after a few seconds the playing starts.Also when I want to make a change,it takes forever.
I work on a 1Ghz PowerPC G4 with It has 48,63 GB left.
It runs OSX 10.4.5
I use the latest update of iLife6.
What is the problem of iMovie,everytime I make a large project,it seems that iMovie can't handle it.
I also tried to work on a 400gb external hd,but that makes no difference.
I'm starting to loose confidence in the quality of iMovie.

You will probably know more about editing and Mac's then I do, but I completed al lot of projects with crazy tricks and I was confronted with the same problems (probably not with the same origin). So for what it is worth: you checked in Preferences the playback quality of iMovie and choose standard. Second: you tried the same importing trick also with your older version of iMovie? (see internet on this issue e.g iLife 6 and iMovie)

Thanks,finaly someone trying to help me.
Done that already,but it doesn't help.
I don't have the older version of iMovie anymore,but as both projects are bad now,it won't do any good I think.
Maybe I'll have to reinstall iMovie5 to make new projects,until 6 is working as it should be.
