Imovie

Well my dilemma is that i have a mini dv tape which i believe was recorded on a canon digital camera and i have put it in my Sony handy cam to load into my computer (iMovie) and well i get this black frame around the picture as though the recording window is smaller if you know what i mean, plus the audio is only one channel (left side)...Any ideas?..
