IMs to text via AIM 1.1 vs AOL 4.7

I have been using AOL Instant Messenger 4.7 to send IMs to my family's cell phones SMS. I have the numbers in the buddy list (i.e. +1 10 digits) it works great but AOL IM tends to crash from time to time. I upgraded to Mac AIM 1.1 which is more stable but feature quit working. I fired up AOL 4.7 again and sent a test message to my cell phone and it worked fine. The whole family is Mac and we all have iPhones.

I fired up iChat and it would not send text messages either.

Any ideas on what is going on?

I am on latest version of Leopard.
