In GarageBand, tracks aren't highlighted

I've been editing using GarageBand 3.0.4 and for some reason, I can't seem to get any of the tracks to light up or change color to show it is highlighted. They've light up before, but it's not happening now. When I try to split the track, nothing appears to happen. I'd like to be able to move parts of one track to another track. Any ideas as to how I might fix this problem. I appreciate any help someone is willing to give to me.

I think it is, but I don't think my message was clear. I've been having a lot of problems with GarageBand and I was told that it is probably a problem with the software. So I would like to close this thread. Thanks for asking for that clarity.
