NOW...

I have been fooling with the network control panel :)

NOW when I try to open the network control panel it just will not open.
It trys and opens it but just starts the network inspection and never stops. It locks the control panel and I have to crash the machine to escape.
Tried to kill the process in terminal but the ps command doesn't show the task???

I had the same problem. OS X takes a LONG (like ten minutes) time to time out if it comes across a bogus network configuration. All it takes is patience (a LOT of patience), and then once the Network panel comes up, either set the TCP/IP configuration to "no network" (if you're not connected to one) or set it to something valid. If, for example, you just give it a bogus IP address, it will take FOREVER to time out. But once it's set correctly, you're back in business, without having to do anything drastic, like reinstall X.
