Installation: Terminal doesn't work

Hi. I am trying to install Adobe CS4. I bought it online and can only download it, don't have the cd-roms. I do have the serial number though.

Here's what happens:
I have to open Terminal, then type in sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts (done)

Then I have to type in my password (done. I did shell>new command, that's right, right?)

What's supposed to happen: TextEdit should automatically open a file, where I have to type more stuff in.

What happens: another terminal window opens, displays somthing like my user name=username (edit: to be specific, it says: Marie-Lastnames-MacBook-Pro:~ marie$)

What am I doing wrong? I never used Terminal before.

My MacBook Pro is only one day old, the system is OS X 10.6.

Please help :)

Thank you.

If you paid for it at some site which asks you to mess around with system files to get it installed I suggest you call your credit card company and cancel the transaction.

I figured that by now:(
They didn't say it before though, it said you only have to download it.

Thanks anyway. At least I guess I learned something.

edit: Wait, even though I might sound incredible naive now, but does that mean they're not Adobe-authorized? Great. Never trust the internet.
