Installer not working on new software I have purchased

Help please, anyone!!!

I am trying to become more techno savy and recently purchased airport express and an ipod for my hubby with the hi fi stereo system. So after several hundred dollars, I am not able to install the software for either. I have 49 GB space left on my emac. It's a 1GHz PowerPC G4 with 512 MB SDRAM.

I tried airport express first, but realized (after the intaller kept stalling in the middle) that I do not have an airport card in my 3 yr old emac.

So then I bought a usb wireless (because I was told that I couldn't get an airport card in my mac, although I now think that is incorrect info). The wirelss usb would not install either.

Then tried to install new ipod/itunes software from CD. That won't install either. Now installer won't even open from either CD or lanching installer.

Here's what I have done after 3 long days of research:

repaired permissions many times.
3 soft reboots
Reloaded disk one of panther and repaired disk. One error came back unfixed, ran again and it appeared to fix????

Still can't run installer. Good news, nothing else seems to be amiss. Not yet anyway. All other programs seem to be working fine. These are the first programs I have tried to install in a very long time, so don't know if this is a new or old problem. (I download updates automatically and haven't had a problem with that yet.) I can access pics off of CDs and burn music, etc.

I probably need to defrag my disk as my kids download tons of games and I have made DVDs and trashed them, but I don't think that would be the problem with the installer, would it?

What else should I do?

Thanks for the help

Not all USB wi-fi gismos will work, and some may not need anything installed. Just see if it appears in airport admin utility (not sure about this though).

Have you looked on the manufacturers site for the latest Mac info/installer for wi-fi.

iPod should appear as a hard disc anyway. Then you can download the latest ipod stuff from Apple website. Run software update as well.

What system are you running? You may need to be on 10.4 for the latest iTunes to work - someone else will have to give that info. I don't know.

I checked and 0S X version I have is fine. I can't launch the software at all. Even from the icon on the desk top of the disk. It opens the files, but clicking on install software doesn't work. It's just bounces around a little. Same when I go directly into the installer application.

I am not really worried about the USB wireless thing now as I think I can get a card installed., but it's a huge problem that no software will install. I can see it on the CD, it just won't install anything.

Thanks for trying to help though.

Are you trying to install from an account that doesn't have the privileges? It should ask for a password to allow you to install stuff. Maybe your permissions are corrupted.

Try running the "Repair disc Permissions" from the Disk Utility program.

Disk Utility is in the Utilities folder in the Go pull down menu in Finder.

She already repaired permissions.
It is a point worth emphasizing, however, that Repair Permissions should be carried out before and after installing anything. But start by rebooting the computer as this fixes a multitude of problems.

If rebooting doesn't help, I'd be tempted to drag anything iTunes related to the trash then try the installer again.

The CD's I tried to install are these:

iPod and iTunes disk that came with the new iPod I just purchased. I do have the most current version of iTunes already on my emac, and I noticed under iPod updates in the Utilities folder, that I do have the most recent verson of IPod, but iPod has never been installed on my emac so I figured I needed to put the disk in and run the installer from the disk as the iPod packaging stressed to install the CD before plugging in your iPod.

So it's the installer file on the CD, also before this, I tried to install Airport Express from the CD that came with that whole package. It would open and get all the way to picking where to install (HD) the software, then it would hang up. IT just would not continue. Now, installer won't open at all. I did not have an airport card in my mac when I ran airport express, and that's when the trouble started. Maybe I should dump all airport files???? I am afraid I would dump something importants though.

So I have been trying to install the retail version of both Airport Express and the iPod CDs lanching from CD. I also cannot open the installer application from the Utilities file.

I have soft rebooted three times and did a repair disk from the first aid utility on the first OS X CD that came with the computer.

Is there any way to reinstall the install application with out having to reinstall them all the software, assuming I have a disk to do that. I did not run t he hardware CD yet. I am always afraid to go messing with my mac too much.

Thanks so much. I am really wanting to get that ipod up and running?

And I did check my privledges and tried to launch from my visitor loggin and it did say visitor did not have authority to run installer. So I don't think it's privledges that's the issue, but what do I know.

And I did check permissions, and I am the administrator and that looks good. Tried to launch installer from another account, and it said that account did not have authority to run it. So don't think that's the issue, but what do I know?

Ah, well you already have iTunes so you don't need that. And the iPod software installer is built into iTunes so you don't need that CD either!

Simply connect the iPod and it should work. You may be given the option to install new software via the Internet.
