Installer opens, then immediately quits.

I'm trying to install a package and the installer immediately quits after I open the package. Also, instead of an open box icon, the package has a blank sheet of paper icon. I think the installer.app may be corrupt or missing files. What do I do? Thanks anyone who can help.
 
Yes it was something I downloaded. However, it opens just fine on my friends mac running 10.4 also. I'm pretty sure my installer.app is just missing files. Where can I get a new copy of installer?
 
If you believe it's the installer application, you could get a copy from your friends Mac.
You could try to repair permissions using disk utility or trash the preference file as well. Both could cause problems. Have you tried using another .dmg package?
 
You can also install installer with Pacifist, but you'll need your install CD. I would also look for a plist (preference) file in (home)/library/preferences or /library/preferences, probably called com.apple.installer.plist. Delete it if you find it and installer will make a new one - plist files become corrupt much more often than the actual program.
