installing 10.1 (from update CD)

Nummi

happy (again)
I copied all of the CD files onto a blank partition. I used file buddy to get invisible files on too. I even deleted the "CheckforOSX" file. I booted off of that system folder.... ::: The installer was running, I clicked OK a bunch of times for legel stuff, then I got to the part where you choose which partition you want to install on. I saw all 4 of my partitions, but they were grayed out! Then I tryed clicking on one anyway, and it crashed. It fell back onto some UNIX crap, with the message: "press return to restart computer". Pressing return did not work, so I had to use the restart button. Does anyone know why the partitions are grayed out?

thanks,

You can ignore this if it doesn't apply to your situation...

I found that I had to repartition my friend's hard drive to get Mac OS X to install because it refused to allow an installation on any partition over 8MB, and then I made sure that the ~8MB partition I had made for him was the first partition on the disk just to be safe. Apple has a TechNote about this issue.

First off, I think you mean 8 GB, right? I don't think OS X will install on a partition that is only 8 MB in size. :D

Second, I think the 8 GB problem only applies to some computers. I haven't had this problem myself, and I am running OS X from my 15 GB partition that is the first partition of the hard drive.

I have OSX 10.1.1 installed on the second partition (15 GB) with OS 9.2.2 on the first partition and they both work beautifully. So I think the limitation only applies to certain machines.

simx -i'm not a partition man, but from what i read, i think the 'first partition' is the key here. i think the 8gb figure is more for those of us who don't partition. i can't imagine that if i threw it on my 80gb drive with 60gb used, that it would work without optimizing. good example - it never used to wake that drive when accessing the desktop until i defragmented and optimized. now i wish it would go back to the way it was. but jamerican might have a point. jamerican, how large is your first partition?

well, i'm fresh out of ideas without any more clues than this. Have you figured it out yet or do you want to tell us some more info in hopes we'll spot something?

I got the 10.1 update installed. I found out that my cd drive uses ATI. Same connection as the HD. There is place for an extra HD in my G4. So I plugged the cd drive into the spot where the extra cd-drive would go. (I also switched a switch from master to slave, I do not know if that did anything.) Everything worked fine. Even though it felt like the cd was reading at 4X :) You guys can stop thinking of ideas, and go on with your lives. Thanks for the help :)
