Installing Classic on X

Hey everyone,
i just recently did a clean install of jagaur on my iMac and forgot to put 9 on first, is there anyway that i can extract the files from the 9 cd and put classic on my machine w/out doing a reinstall.

Yeah, that will work because that computer can boot into 9. If it were a newer computer that couldn't, I'd say you were stuck unless the 9 installer ran in X.

the os 9 cd doesnt recognize the hard drive and it wont mount it, could i just copy a system folder from another os 9 machine and use it?

Looks like you missed adding the OS 9 drivers to the HD when you initialized it. this means that it won't boot up from OS 9 on the Hard drive (copying another System Folder to your Hard drive probably won't help), and no way to fix that, except to start over. When you boot to the OS X install CD and run Disk Utility, you'll see that erasing gives you the choice to install OS 9 drivers. That's the only time you can do that. There's not a real sequence to follow with installing both OS 9 or OS X. If you have the original OS 9.0.x that probably shipped with this system, I would recommend that you install that first, then go HERE . This link gives you ALL updates available for the OS 9 system, dowload them all (unless you have a later version of OS 9) and install all in order. Then install Jaguar and you should be home free.

No, but your system is capable of booting to OS 9, might be handy to keep that ability. :) If all you need is Classic mode, and you are certain you will never boot into OS 9, then copying a System Folder from somewhere else should be OK. I put more info out earlier, assuming that you may want to maintain access to a bootable OS 9 (and have it up-to-date)

A Hint: You will be impressed with your iMac (identical to mine) if you pull the 128 MB and put in a 512 MB (giving you 768 MB)
That will give you a better working Classic (assuming you get it working)

When I reformatted my G3 Mac I installed my OS X before using the restore CD’s. Now when I try to use the first of 5 cd’s it says that it doesn’t recognize it.

Should I have used the software restore cd’s before installing OS X or because thr OS X software originally came with the new imac.
