Hello,
i have an imac G3 currently running mac os 9.0.4 and today i bought a imac 10.1.2 install cd. My imac is booting off my 5GB flash drive right now its running 9.0.4 and when i install mac os 10.1.2 it asks me to choose a destination to install it on but my flash drive doesn't show up as an option. My hard drive is broken or something everytime when i plug it in my cd drive stops working so thats why i am using a flash drive to boot. anyone know how i can solve the problem of the installation????

No matter how times the question is asked, the answer is always the same. You cannot use a System Restore disc to install the OS on a different model computer than the one that shipped with the disc.

Just to second fryke's statement, yep, PowerPC-based iMacs with early versions of OS X (even later versions, too) cannot boot from USB devices.

It is my understanding that only Intel-based Macs can boot from USB. I also found suspect the OP's claim that he was booting from a 5 GB Flash drive. Never seen such a drive. I own a couple of 4 GB Flash drives. I also own an 8 GB USB stick. However, I have never seen or heard tell of a 5 GB USB Flash drive.
