You might try the Open Firmware reset commands that work for Beige and helped me - afterwards it was easy to install Jaguar and to switch between OS 9 and OS X. The normal "reset-nvram" command doesn't exist on Beige, but the "init-nvram" does and seems to do the same job. the other two commands are the same and work, they even work on OldWorld sytems.
To drop into Open Firmware hold down the four keys on startup to get there, command, option, O and F. They type the 3 commands:
init-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
The last command will cause the system to reboot.
