installing osx help

I'am trying to install osx on my old imac (G3 450mhz), the install went ok and for one day everything seemed fine, but then the next time when I tried to start up the computer the screen went a reddish colour and then just black. I first thought the computer was starting up in sleep mode, but then I read more about it and I think the firmware needs to be updated. But for that I need to intall os9 first, now I can't remember when I first intalled osx on my emac wheter or not I used an os9 disc or just used the osx restore disks. The problem is if I did have an os9 disc I must of lost it. So my questions are can firmware be updated on os 8.6 or can I install os9 off macosx restore discs.
Can anyone help

Thanks in advanvce,

This is a known problem with CRT iMacs. It's not irreparable, but it is annoying :(.
Basically, if your computer has anything to do with any form of OS X (even booting from the installer CD/DVD) the video card starts trying to supply a refresh rate too high for the built-in monitor. To get around this, you need to install firmware 4.1.9, which can ONLY be run on OS 9.1 or later (sorry). If you can't even see what's on the screen of the iMac, you'll need either an LCD monitor (refresh rate free) or a CRT that is very high refresh rate-capable.

Good Luck!

By the way, if you have OS 9.0 on a CD, 9.1 or 9.2 (don't remember which right now), is a free download from Apple.

The 9.1 update the 9.2.1 update and the 9.2.2 update are all available from here, they have to be applied in order.

If you have a set of OS X Software Restore CDs either OS 9.1 or 9.2 is on there. You can do a selective restore and just install OS 9 which will save all your data files and preference settings. The trick there, of course, is booting from the Software Restore CD and being able to see the screen.

Hello, thankyou for your replys.
I have a external monitor setup so I can see what is going on. I tried booting from the software restore discs but it would'nt happen, also when I try to run them off os x it doesn' reconize them. What am I doing wrong.
It seems like I'm going to have to buy a os9 install disc.

Thank you again,

Hi Dlloyd,
yes i still have the discs that came with my imac, which are the os 8.6 discs. The discs that came with my newer emac are the os x discs, I can't remember for the life of me if I had a os9 disc with my emac. All the osx discs ( which are grey in colour )I can find are 2 software install discs and 3 software restore discs.
I have been reading more about my problem and it must be the firmware issue, is there anyway I can install firmware update on 8.6? and is os9 on my restore discs? or have I just lost my os9 software install disc?

Many thanks again for all your help,

Are you totally certain that it's 8.6 on those discs? Because if what you said you have (450 MHz iMac) is true, there is no way that can be correct. I have a 400 MHz iMac here, that was bought at least six months before the iMac line was bumped, and it certainly has 9.0.

Hi Dlloyd,
Sorry that was a typo, I have a 400mhz slot loading imac, which is a few years old. I have an even older tray loading imac which accepted osx just fine.It is defentily os 8.6 on those discs. It just looks like i'm going to have to buy a os9 install disc. Also I just realized I need a new battery as my clock keeps forgeting the time every morning!!

Thank you for all your help,
newbie

I think you must have the CDs for the tray-loader and somehow misplaced the ones for the other iMac. The OS on the slot-loading iMac's restore CDs should definitely be OS 9.0.
