Installing Tiger on Blue & White - reading DVD

I have a full retail tiger, trying to install the DVD (heard horror stories about the CDs and want to try it now) , can I just move the DVD writer from my dell? Will the B&W boot from any DVD writer or does it have to be an apple blessed one? I believe that the DVD must be set to master rather than CS.
B&W rev 2 , 512meg. Upgraded to 450 G4.

you should have be able to run that DVD drive in your mac set to master. But some of the software may not work with that dive. I know I use to have G3 Bage dasktop that I had put a DVD writer in and it would use. Tosat would brun useing it. But OS X would not and the Apple DVD player software would not see the dive as a DVD drive. just some for worning there.

Wow, camgangrel21, are you drunk or is one of your hands slower than the other? There are maaaaany mixed up characters in your psot. ;)
To answer the original question: *Any* DVD drive (writer or not) should basically work to read DVDs, and that's the only thing you need. I'd connect it and boot your Mac. Then insert the Tiger DVD and see if it shows up. If it does, start the installer (which reboots from the DVD, if everything works fine). If that doesn't work, I'd still try to insert the DVD and restart holding down the "c" key...

Not drunk just end up thinking what I have to say faster then my hands will type. As for the miss spelling I'm sorry about that never was any good at spelling but programing yes but spelling no.

Tried a good panther cd, will not boot from it, but sees it. Any other ideas welcome. The NEC is seen but no boot. Should I do a carbon copy to a spare drive and try that? Is there a known drive that will boot in a blue and white G3 that will read and hopefully write dvds?
thanks

The same thing is happening with me. I have a blue & white converted G4 processor running 9.2.2 and another volume that has 10.3 (which is corrupt). I have a new Tiger DVD. Both OS's see the disk, but it will not let me boot from the external DVD drive. The DVD drive is a La Cie USB/Firewire. I've tried booting and holding "c" also tried to select Option during boot. Still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
