installing to aplications folder

Is there any way to install an application to the main applications folder without logging out and then logging as admin? If I install the new safari browser to my home applications folder it won't be accessible to the rest of my family. On a linux system it is possible to access almost all aspects of the system once you provide a root user name after prompting. I don't want to give admin rights to myself for everyday stuff as I could do some damage, neither do I want to mess with the permissions of the Applications folder. It is only a small issue but sorting it out would save me time. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I don't have this problem since I always log in as admin :-(

But I have noticed the authentication box that comes up has space for you to type an administrator user name as well as password. Have you tried doing this? It looks as it was meant to work this way—who knows, maybe it does?

Please post back and let us all know :-)

Yea, some software has an installer that prompts you for an admin password but not all. Something that can be installed by drag and drop is not able to access the the Main applications folder. I've tried entering admin passwords etc. in the System Prefs pane but the access this gives you is restricted to the Preferences pane, it doesn't give you the ability to switch to an identity to acomplish a small task and then switch back.

Can you install in your local Applications folder, and then use Terminal to sudo mv to the main Applications folder ?
