Interface With Epson Cx6500

The interface with the multifunction printer Epson CX6500, or at least with the scanning function, has gone down. On startup, or whenever I try scanning, an error message to the effect that "a different scanner is connected, please select the right one" comes up. I have tried various things like reinstalling from the CD provided, and from updated software from Epson, and trashing what looked like preference files for scanning (this used to sometimes work in Mac OS9 and earlier, but now I am running 10.3.9)

Epson tech help support was really no tech and no help. They said that if the updated driver did not fix it then it was something in the MaxOS.
