Internal modem won't disable eMac G3

Trying to get a eMac (10.3.9) to work with an ethernet connection, the ethernet device works properly, obtains an IP address right on, but can't ping out. When I try to check the network configurations, the internal modem keeps turning itself on and making itself the primary, even when I remove it and lock the settings. My only thought on this is that the computer has AOHell on it...is it possible that the evil has taken over the network configurations?

Check your "Login Items" under your account in the "Accounts" pane of the System Preferences -- see if there's some sort of AOL program that's launching that could be changing the network settings.
