I have a 2008 macbook 10.5.8 and I used my earphones the other day and I have not been able to get my internal speakers to work since this time. A red light appears in my output jack and system preferences, under the volume icon, shows digital output and does not allow me to change it.

Try inserting and removing the headphone plug again, inserting slowly, and removing slowly.
The red light indicates that your computer thinks there's still a pair of headphones connected. This can be dirt in the plug's hole, or a couple of reasons. Make sure the plug is clean, and try inserting and removing the headphone plug again (maybe a couple of times until it's resolved).
Shutting down and/or restarting may also help, if you haven't tried that.
