Internet connect problem

My son has an iBook connected to the net via a cable modem. He's just bought a second hand G4 iMac running OSX 1.2. I plugged the cable into the ethernet socket, configured using DHCP in network preferences, but it won't connect. Everything appears to be the same as on the iBook. Any ideas what might be wrong?

If you are changing the ethernet connection to a second computer (unplug from one, then plug into the second computer), then you must reset the cable modem. I usually unplug the power and leave the cable modem with power off for 20 or 30 seconds, and plug back in.
That should do it. You would do this each time you swap between the systems. A simpler method is to add an internet router/with multiple ethernet connections, after the cable modem. You can leave the computers connected to the router, and both can be used at the same time.
