Internet connection and sharing problem

Two problems:

1) I am trying to share the internet from my mac. I was doing this successfully and had to take my laptop on the road. I have reconnected it and 'think' I have it set up the same. I am sharing the internet, using DHCP with manual address. The DHCP works, the second computer gets a valid ip, can recognize intenet names (DNS is ok) and can ping the local gateway. It cannot ping anything past the gateway. It seems like internet sharing isn't enabled but apparently it is?? Any ideas or diagnostics you can suggest?

2) What makes troubleshooting 1) even tougher is that if I reboot to ensure that my setting are okay (even though I thought that was a windows thing) I have huge trouble connecting with dialup (the joys of living in the country). It takes numerous attempts to connect. I didn't have this pronblem with my former windows machine. Any suggestions regarding dialup settings. I am in canada and connecting to sympatico. The phone line seems ok and when I connect it holds the connection and the speed seems as good as it gets where I am (24,000)
 
Oh yeah, I just realized that in between when it last worked for internet sharing and now, I was on the road and downloaded the latest tiger update. Anyone else notice a problem with internet sharing with the newest update (I'm at work anfd I don't know the version but it was last week or so). I will look deeper tonight to see if any settings I didn't notice have changed but I don't really think so.
 
The latest Security Update for 10.4 automatically turned off my sharing. I just had to go back into System preferences and re-enable the sharing after the update.
