I am new to macs, currently using a new 12" ibook G4. I also have at home a very old pc, running on windows 98. it is currently set up with optusnet adsl broadband with a d-link DSL-302G modem.

i am now trying to connect the ibook to the internet, but do not even know where to start. optus net do not support mac (grrr), so i was hoping you would be able to tell me how to go about it, and to know if it is possible to connect both computers to the internet at the same time.

thank you your help.

Are you connecting via PPPoE with the PC? I.e., do you have a username and password required to connect? If so, open System Preferences and select Network -> Built-in Ethernet -> PPPoE. You can enter the salient information there. If you select "Show PPPoE status in menu bar", you'll have a drop-down menu that lets you connect and disconnect.

As for sharing the internet connection, the optimal setup is a router, which can connect to your DSL service and then share the connection among a group of servers. I bet that Optus has routers it supports, probably including a router that has both wireless and wired connections. Alternatively, go buy a brand-name one (DLink and Netgear are two examples) and set it up yourself, as the documentation and process tend to be relatively straightforward.
