I took a look at my network and there was a foreign computer there as you can see called Yehuda Cik's Computer. Cool, nice to meet ya Yehuda, my name is habilis. Or was there? I have had my firewall blazing since day one with only my AIM and Gnutella port open. I'm unable to login to Yehuda's machine. Anyway I'm wondering if this is some sort of illusion or delusion I'm having and there actually is no hacker stealing my identity at the moment...

That is definately wierd. That shouldn't be there.......it shouldn't be in your workgroup. Do you use an airport or other wireless network, if so...someone could be jumping on your network and your finder would find them as a server.

Yeah, arden, I found that page too. I did a search for that guy myself and I might be getting hacked by a world renowned jewish pianist.

Anyway, no Zammy I can't log in to that machine. I wonder if that computer is at my ISP or something. I used the command line to check if anyone has logged in to my machine besides me and no one has.

Not to worry, in that case, he's probably just trying to put his songs on your computer to get you to listen to them. ;) :D

Did you check your router/connection....maybe there is a strange ethernet cable back there running outside somewhere and into the guys house ;) Follow the ethernet cable....

If you are on DSL or Cable, or something, this has been known to happen, since quite often an entire neighborhood will be on one subnet, because of lack of IP addresses.

I guess what I would do in your case is, I would get a packet sniffer and figure out what is actaully going on. You could use something like Macsniffer. Run some packet captures and check out the ports that are coming and going from that unit. That would allow you to also capture that Mac's IP. I am not familure with Apples airport, but I know on other wireless and wired routers you can lock down to the mac address (network card address) of the nic cards on your network. I would also make sure that you do not have DHCP enabled on the router. That way you are not just handing addresses out to anyone that decides to get on your network and use your bandwidth. That is my 2 cents.

Ok habilis it's rather important to know whether you have a wireless network or not... If you live in an apartment building and have an 802.11b card or router, and someone else has the same within your range, and you both have filesharing on, no doubt you'll see each other! Your firewall will automatically open the ports necessary to discover other computers if you have filesharing on (and possibly even if you have it off, 138 seems to be open frequently).

Now this computer is displayed in your network list, it doesn't mean that his computer is necessarily connected to yours! It just means that it's advertised itself on the same network you're connected to. I've been in a hotel recently with a LAN high speed internet connection, and guess what, we got access to *several* other computers on the network simply because they didn't shut down their windows file sharing properly. Also, I have a few friends who live in condo complexes with similar internet connections, and they could see other computers in the complex in a similar fashion.

So as long as YOUR computer is closed to unauthorized filesharing, you have nothing to worry about... :)

Oh. Yeah sorry, I'm not on a wireless net, just ethernet and I'm connected via cable to my ISP Adelphia.net.

To add to this insanity, yesterday I saw "Jeff Cik's Computer" also briefly logged onto this phantom network.

Like you said these computers might be linked up to the adelphia network somehow and I'm registering the Computers at the Cik's house somehow. When I doubleclick on eithr of Yehuda Cik's computer of Jeff Cik's computer icon I just timeout with no connection. I see no othr users actually logged in to my Mac. Weird.

Out of curiosity, if you can get the IP address of those servers, try a traceroute on them and see where along the stream they bridge your network...

Wow, crazy! Incorect, but crazy! (It lists me as being in TO, when I'm actually in Ottawa; perhaps it's just finding the head office for my ISP....?)

Pretty much... the ISP reports the information on the IP address, so my IP is listed as being in Kent, WA... which is close, as I am about 3 miles east of Kent.
