Invicible

How do you make the backround of a picture in Photoshop invisible? I was thinking of makeing some T-Shirts at www.cafepress.com but want the backrounds of my pictures invisible.

When you make a new file, select Transparent as background. It'll show as a chess-board, but once you save as a .gif it'll be invisible...
