iPhone & iPhoto

I cannot download my Photo Album from my iPhone into Iphoto.

When I attach my iPHone--it shows up--but I can only download the Camera Roll.

How do I download ALL the pictures from the Photo Library of the iPhone.

Thank you.

You can't, and here's why:

Anything located in the "Camera Roll" is a picture taken with the iPhone's camera (or some similar method), and so those photos don't appear on your Mac until you sync. Photos in the "Camera Roll" are synced to your iPhoto Library.

Anything located in another photo library on your iPhone came from iPhoto on your Mac in the first place, so there's no need to sync it back.

I realize there are some exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, that's why only the "Camera Roll" is synced to the Mac.

Where did the photos in your Photo Album on the iPhone come from?

Every picture on my iPhone was taken on my iPhone.
Not one picture was taken or put on my iphone from another source.

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro & when I connected my iPhone, it made me update the software on the iPhone.

So how do I get these pictures??? Is there any way.

I tell you--this iphone with the new MacBook pro has been a pain.

Isn't there any way at all to back up the photos (all 1200 of them)

I don't want to lose them & I don't want to email them to myself. There has to be a way. thnx again for the reply. This is a challenge.

Ah, yes, iPhones and iPods operate best when synced with only one computer -- this can cause problems when you purchase a new computer. iPods and iPhones are not "storage media" -- meaning they are not meant to download data to from one computer, hold the data, then transfer the data on the iPod/iPhone to a new computer (much like an external hard drive would be used for).

They are meant as a one-way sync for the most part, especially in terms of music and photos. You can put music and photos onto the iPod or iPhone, but you cannot take the iPod/iPhone with that music and copy the photos/music off of it onto a DIFFERENT computer. This may be where your frustration lies.

The "best" way would be to sync those photos on your OLD Mac, use the Migration Assistant to move your user data to the NEW Mac, then sync the iPhone with the new Mac.

I could always do this in the past..
I knew when it asked me to upgrade-I should have said NO..

I have been using Macs for years & everything was always so very very easy. Those Apple people & trying to protect everything are making it very frustrating.

I cannot even put my iPHone into my computer @ work & just PLAY the songs. I don't want to download them--I only want to hear them...But you can't...They are grayed out....

I'll just go buy some of the third party iPhone/Itunes programs & be able to do what I always have been able to do in the past.

I love my iPHone & I love my MAC--but not together...

My pictures are probably on my new MacBook Pro--but that doesn't show up. Somebody just let me know to press the option key when I'm opening up Iphoto & I'll see the old libraries.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions.

It's all good, the "Thanks" button in the lower right-hand corner of the post is more than enough.

When you use Apple gear the way Apple intends you to use it, it flows flawlessly. Everything is synergized and it all "just works." If you try to use Apple gear in a non-traditional way, that's where you run into frustrations, whether or not what you were trying to do is logical or illogical.

Short answer: I understand your frustration. Here's to hoping you can find some 3rd-party utilities to work around some of the shortcomings.
