iphone just stops and freezes

i have a 3G.....16GB....version 4.0.1.... and when i'm typing it just stops and i have to wait a few sec... then its ok...but some times..it reboots itself and any
messages i had are then lost?.....my battery is always charged so i know its not low...this is very frustrating.... this is my 2nd 3g iphone...i had a problem
with my first one...they gave me this one from the apple store...could it be i just have a bad phone..?...i never had this problem with my other iphone...Help
 
Thank you so much.... it worked so far...but usually what you advise me to do usually does work....i was getting pretty frustrated...... thanks again....:)
