Hey guys, I want to get an ipod touch, since it has the wireless internet and stuff. It think it would be very useful to me, since I wont be able to have my laptop around all of the time. Then I checked out the iphone, It has a camera on it that would save me a little pocket room. Would it be possible to buy a LEGITIMATE iphone but not get any cell phone plan? Im not a big fan of cell phones at all, they cost too much and I rarely use them (and Im 19 believe it or not!) I am not interested in some black market iphone from Ebay, I want to buy it from an apple store. I have no intention to install some chip that lets me use any phone service or anything like that. I just want the camera part.

Is it possible to get one from an apple store without signing up for cell phone service?

Well that was a complete answer :) I should have asked, are you forced to sign the AT$T contract when you buy it at the store, or do you have to get the contract inorder to turn the phone on and stuff?

You can (here in the UK at least) get a pay-as-you-go iPhone but its a LOT more pricey. £349 and £399 for the 8 and 16gb. You also have to top it up with by the look of it, £10 pounds minumum each month.

Maybe AT&T have a similar offer? Still a high cost alternative though.

Also, being a photogeek, I would say get the touch, the camera aint all that great in the iPhone. Its not many megapixels and worse its an itty bitty little lens. Even a cheap compact digital will be immeasurably better for pictures, and will also deal with things like low light conditions a lot better. The touch has everything else you want for less money and no messing about with phone companies.

ipod touch was the original plan, but I thought the new 3G I phone cost $200-250 and had some small new features. oh well,Ipod touch will do though! Thanks for the help

The prices you quote are probably the AT&T subsidized ones, where you get that lower rate as you sign up for a 2 year monthly contract. Phones without monthly contracts are always more expensive as you pay closer to the actual cost of the phone.

Its like game consoles, where at first they tend to be sold at a loss as the company makes the money of the games it sells. In phoneworld they make their money back from call charges.

Yeah, I understand that. They rather give you a phone dirt cheap and suck your soul with a contract than you buy a phone for a high price and not let them suck your soul :)

I learned my lesson the easy way. I saw my parents and a few of my friends get insane phone bills ranging from $200 to $600 a month with several phone companies. Of course it was probably irresponsible use that caused it.. like calling your granny 4 hours away. I rather just get a pay as you go phone and tell people "Dont call me, Ill call you!" :)
