iPhoto 5 unstable in 10.4

This is a follow up to a question/answer between Peter and Tom about how iPhoto mangles thumbnails and crashes a lot for a few (lucky) users. ("Question - Ilife05 & Iphoto": http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q888/Ilife05-&-Iphoto.html) Personally, I was able to make iPhoto crash reproducibly by merely shift-clicking a range of photos. Clearly unacceptable, unusable, and driving me crazy.

Background

10.4 installed with "Archive and Install". Upgrade to 10.4.1 (Build 8B15). iLife '05 (iPhoto 5.0.2). 12" AlBook 867 MHz/256 MB ~1200 photos (mostly pix of my 2 month old twins!) 6 GB free disk space

What I've done

I followed Tom's advice and tried the following recipe:
0) backup photo library (copy home/Pictures to an iPod)
1) repair permissions (didn't do much)
2) delete home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
3) delete home/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Thumb*.data and home/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Library.iPhoto
4) open iPhoto by cmd-opt-click and selecting all "rebuild library" options

This takes a while and erases all photo albums, titles, comments, homepage information (.Mac), and books. Also, many thumbnails lose their proper rotation.

Current situation

Tom's advice has made an improvement in the state of iPhoto -- I can now select, edit, and rotate photos. Progress...

BUT quitting iPhoto (cmd-Q) causes it to crash without saving recent work (like new albums). Reopening iPhoto, now I have some thumbnails, but not all, which are the proper orientation, but wrong aspect ratio (should be portrait but are landscape, causing the picture to be stretched -- only the thumbnail, not the picture itself). Slideshow also still causes a crash. I haven't tried homepage or book functions yet, but I am not hopeful.

What do I try next? And what is going on???

Well, problem solved. I'm just posting this in case someone else runs into the same problem...

Analysis of problem

I had installed iLife '05 when using Panther 10.3.9. The most recent update was to iPhoto 5.0.2. Then I had installed Tiger, ran Software Update, and finally reinstalled iLife '05. The trick is that the iPhoto on the install DVD is iPhoto 5.0.1 and does not overwrite the "newer" version of iPhoto.

Solution

Throw the application iPhoto into the trash. Custom install iPhoto 5.0.1 from the install DVD. Run software update to bring iPhoto back to 5.0.2. Now all the bizarre behaviors are resolved.

G'day;

I'm new to the List and was surfing around looking for a resolution to a problem I think is similar to those expressed in this thread.

When I went to iPhoto 5 and wanted my iPhoto 4 libraries opened, I opened iPhoto and it asked if I wanted the photos converted, reminding me that they would not then be available in iPhoto 4. I of course agreed. Shouldn't have. :-(

When I finally opened the libraries, the images were all distorted to what appears to be an equal aspect ratio. This of course distorts the portrait images. It looks like iPhoto is exhibiting the thumbnails.

Is there a solution to retrieving my photos and all the titles etc. I made? I do have backups, but doing all that work again makes me sleepy just thinking about it.

Thanks
