... whenever I insert my compact flash card (via PCMCIA slot.). However, I hate iphoto, and don't want it. Is there a way to quit this behaviour?

Also, the computer always boots to the login screen, even though I have that option turned off in the security preferences. Is there a way to get a mac to do what you tell it to?

You can always delete the iPhoto app if you don't intend to use it. There may also be an iPhoto pref you can change to prevent it launching.

To bypass the login window, go to System Preferences/Accounts, Click "Login Options" and select a user to "Automatically Log in As".

Did you check the CD & DVD System Preference and changed it?

Did you go to System Preference->Accounts? Then highlight your name, click Login Options and then set automatic login to your name (note: You MUST be Administrator! Normal accounts will NOT show this!).

In the applications folder, there is a program called ImageCapture and in the preferences you can set it to open various programs or do nothing when a flash card (or camera) is plugged in.
