iPhoto - corrupted or lost images?

iPhoto doesn't work right for me. I fear I may have lost some of my digital photographs forever.

It's version 4.0.3. Supplied with my Mac when I got it in 2004 - I've upgraded my Mac to Tiger since then but have not upgrade iLife.

Basically, a lot of my photos seem to be 'missing'.

(I'm not sure how this happened. Two (or three?) months after I got my Mac I was sick of having the hard disk pre-partioned in two so I backed up everything to CD-ROM and started from a fresh, single partion.)

When the photo is 'there', I can double-click on the thumbnail from the Photo Library window and the photo will appear; I can also drag from the photo from the window onto the desktop and it's there. Unfortunately with the 'missing' photographs, clicking on the thumbnails leads to a blank screen of brushed metal, and I cannot drag those photos onto the desktop.

I'm really a bit upset, some of the those photos I'm not sure I've backed-up since iPhoto went wonky. ;(

i'm having a similair problem but i know that i deleted all the files by axident because the program wasn't working so i deleted all the pictures and then moved the files to my desk top and then i re imported them but after that when i emtied my trash can it deleted the re imported files and i had already cleared tyh files of my desktop
