iPHOTO crashes now

Remember the problem I had a couple weeks ago with MAIL? Got that fixed. Now iPHOTO is doing the same thing.

Here's what is so strange. Again, just like the problem I had with MAIL, if I log off and log back on (on the same computer) with a different user, iPHOTO launches without a glitch.

When I try to launch (USER 1) it starts to launch, and disappears. I get the "suddenly crashed would you like to send a report to apple" window.

Here's what I have done. Repeatedly.

1. Ran the disk utility.
2. Ran a program called "AppDelete" that supposedly removes everything related to an application.
3. Copied the removed files - just in case - to another hard drive and to an external hard drive.
4. Deleted the trashed files.
5. Reloaded a fresh iPHOTO.
6. Rebooted the computer.

Oh...I forgot. I've done this twice WITH filevault running and now once with filevault turned off. I swear all the problems started with file vault. As an aside, about every three or four boots I get the message "your system is using way too much memory and file vault would like to get it back for you now, okay?" So, I finally turned it off. That seemed awfully often, don't you think? According to my computer I have 38mg of a 080 mg hd still available, by the way...1.5mg of mem installed (the max for my 2002 Quicksilver).

When I launch in USER 1, crashes.
Launch in USER 2, launches fine....no problem
PS I have another third party photo viewing program (NIKON's PicturePerfect also loaded on the system. And I can't find anything that says "if you choose to use this instead of iPHOTO we'll make it crash, okay?" or anything that would indicate a preference.)

Any ideas?

Here's the report....

Have you tried loading with a fresh library? Start up iPhoto while holding the option key, and it will ask to create a new library. I would also run a program like Maintenance to clear up the system.

Haven't tried the library but yes, I forget to put the "Maintenance" program as something else I have done. Three times.
Will try the library option.

How much free space do you have on the drive? You should maintain at least 10% free (some recommend 15%) so at least 8 gig on an eighty gig drive. Less lead to file corruption.

I've read that when a problem arises in a users account and does not show up in another, then there is something wrong with that users account that's experiencing the problem. It's usually corrupted Fonts, Caches and/or Preference files that is the culprit.
Validate the Fonts.
Open Font Book, choose All Fonts under Collection, Choose the first Font on the list, then use the ⌘ + A keys to choose all, in the File menu > Validate Fonts. A window with a list of Fonts that have passed, have a minor problem or a serious problem with a Font(s) will pop-up.
Caches, use your maintenance tool to delete all system and users caches.
Preferences, since you used AppDelete to trash iPhoto and it's files then there must be another plist(s) that is corrupt.
Move the Preferences folder that's in Home > Library to the Desktop then logout and in.
Take a set of plist files, 10, 20 or however many you want and move them to the new Preferences folder in Home > Library. Logout and in then launch iPhoto. If iPhoto works properly then move the next set of plist files from the Preference folder that's on the Desktop to Home > Library > Preferences until you get to a set that "breaks" iPhoto. Move that set with a corrupt plist file back to the Desktop Preference folder and then move a 1/4 or 1/2 of them back to Home > Library > Preferences folder until iPhoto "breaks" again. Don't forget to logout and in each time you move a set of plist files to Home > Library > Preferences. Keep doing this until you find the corrupt file(s) even after you find one there may be more, so do this to all the preference files that are the Desktop.

After all that, it could be File Vault. I've also read that it causes problems too.

Thanks for the step by step. I haven't had time to check this out these days, but I will. In the meantime, I'm just using the program provided by Nikon...

In answer to the obvious question about space also in the thread...there is 38gb available on a 70gb hard drive. I don't think space is the issue.

Technically, I guess, yes as these are two programs that are on the HardDrive (User1) but can be accessed by User 2 with logon. Does that answer make sense? the applications are on Harddrive#1 (there are two, but this one has 36g/80g space) and both "Users" access the programs on that hard drive.

Now, here's something that is interesting. Following the advice from PBear, I moved my entire PREFERENCES folder to the desktop. I then created a new empty PREFERENCES folder. But, just for snicks, I tried to launch iPHOTO. It created two com.apple.plists and then crashed. The two plists were the iphoto and the help.

I disabled the Application Enhancer for the one session....logged off, logged back on. Tried to launch iPHOTO. Crashed. What the heck is this silly program anyway?

You didn't need to create a new Preference folder, logging out and in automatically does that with a new set of com.apple.xxx.plist files.

My guess would be that the two plist files are conflicting with each other. I had a problem with iPhoto and Mail where the Library and e-mail dates were all the same, not as bad as your problem but pretty annoying for me, but when I tried the new plist procedure all the dates were fixed. I had noticed that one plist file had a duplicate, I forgot which one it was but I didn't put them back in the new Preferences folder since there was a new plist file of it in the Preferences folder, and since then I haven't encountered that problem again.

Here's what I just did: I dragged the preference folder to the desktop. Logged out. Logged back in. Didn't do a thing. A PREFERENCE FOLDER was created by the computer. Tried to launch iPHOTO. Crashed. I guess I'll never use iPHOTO again logged in as User 1. Just can't be bothered at this point. I have another program. I guess I'll just have to learn that one better and trash the iPhoto forever. This is ridiculous. WAAAAAAAAY too much trouble. PS I even got an "UPDATE" software notice the other day for the iPhoto program, which I ran, thinking it may solve the problem. Didn't. I've also rerun the maintenance, the macjanitor, the disk utility, etc. and nothing. Starts to launch, then crashes. Just not worth it...and I'm certainly not going to back up all the files and programs, clean the machine, reinstall Tiger and then struggle getting everything back on track for this stupid iPhoto program. Thanks for your help, but clearly this can't be resolved. And life's too short. Besides, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs just made $10 million while we discussed the problem. So, I'm happy.

My dad had a similar problem last week. Here is how we proceeded this morning to go back to normal.

His machine is a iMac G5. Original system is 10.3.5. iPhoto is 4.0.3.

1) Run the original install disk to repair the OS. This moved us back from 10.3.9 back to 10.3.5. Restart.
2) Use Onyx to erase all caches and other "cleaning" actions. Restart.
3) Use Software Update to update to 10.3.9 (restart and relaunch Software Update until it doesn't find any updates).
4) Use Onyx to run all Maintance tasks
5) Launch iPhoto while holding shft-option keys to rebuild iPhoto library

It takes 2 hours with all downloads and updates, but it is fine now.

How does Onyx differ from Maintenance. Each is a program that seems to be identical. Thanks.

There are several Maintenance Apps available (OnyX, Cocktail, MacJanitor, Macaroni, Anacron, MainMenu)some are freebies and others require a fee. AFAIK, they all pretty much do the same thing to a degree .... it's up to the individual to make a choice on the one to download ...

I suggest you download a couple of different apps and test them out to see which one appears the most user friendly for you.

FWIW, it's possible to run the Maintenance Tasks without the need for any 3rd Party Software at all .... Manually running the maintenance scripts.

Use Onyx. Does nothing for this problem. Have used it at least 12 times since I first encountered this problem. Any other guesses? Perhaps I should take everything off the computer and reformat the hard drives so I can access the iPHOTO on iLife '06? Perhaps I should talk to Apple Support at $100/min? Or take it to a third party at $1000 a day? Sheeze. This should be simple. At this rate, I should be back at OS 8.2 by morning!

So, what do I run? Verification? Maintenance? Cleaning/ Automation? Log Files/ What do I set it at? What do I choose? How does eliminating the Cache help? What do I need to know about putting in the right information for UNIX? This is the problem! Run "ONYX" is meaningless if you don't know what to put in where to how to run it why for it should do whatever.
