iPhoto: Edit Smart Album grayed out

I have 49 smart albums and have from time to time edited or verified an album's criteria by right clicking the album, then selecting "Edit Smart Album" from the pop-up menu.

The other day, I had edited an album. Some time later, I wanted to edit another album and found "Edit Smart Album" grayed out. Not just that album; "Edit Smart Album" is grayed out on all but two of my smart albums. It's also grayed out on the smart albums that iPhoto created at installation time.

If I create a new album, it can be edited. Only my old albums cannot be edited.

There is nothing in the iPhoto preferences about editing smart albums, and the Help is useless.

Could it be that iPhoto for some reason thinks all my albums are in the same category as the iPhoto-created albums? If so, how would I correct that?

I'm going to try replacing the app from a Time Machine backup. If that doesn't work, I'll try reinstalling. I bought the upgrade from the new Apple app store so don't know if I can reinstall the app from there.

I don't want to replace the Library from backup, since I've been working on it inserting Places and Faces and my recent work will be lost. It may come to that.

OS X 10.6.6, iPhoto '11 9.1.1
