iPod charges, but won't mount

I am the law!
I have a 10GB 2nd gen iPod that I'm using with my powermac G5.

When I plug the iPod in, it reboots, showing the apple logo and then it immediately shows the check-mark saying "Ok to disconnect". It won't mount on the desktop and its not showing up in the apple system profiler.

The firewire cable works fine, I tested it on an external hard drive.

It almost looks like 4 of the pins on the iPods firewire connector have slipped down into the body of the iPod.

Does anyone know which pins are for what? I'm assuming 2 are for power and the other four are for data. If the two pins near the flat part of the connector are for power then it would make sense, since the other four (2 in the middle and 2 near the pointed end of the connector) are the ones that look funny.

of course, if this is the problem, i have no idea how i'm going to fix it

Call apple support. I know the tricks for 1st gen iPod (like how to force-mount it) but not for 2nd gen.

When my iPod died Apple shipped me a replacement within one week, all free. I was extremely impressed.

It seems to be a common problem for 1st and 2nd generation ipods (including the audio connector breakage). My friend also encountered this problem some months ago after he bought my first gen 5GB ipod. I returned the ipod (glad it was within the 1 year "repair/return period"). After one week he got a brand new sparkling 5Gb ipod (the old one was really scratched up, 'cause I didn't take much care of it).
