iPod hangs OSX PLEASE HELP

First off - updated software of iPod to 1.0.4. Updated OS X to 10.1.3. Updated iTunes to 2.whateveritisnow.

I plug in the iPod, the Finder tries to mount the drive. Then OSX asks me to continue, initialize or eject the iPod. Doesn't recognize it.

So I went to OS 9, changed the name of the iPod (where it is recognized by the Finder but not iTunes 2 for OS9).

I came back to OS X and the iPod is not recognized at all. The "iTunes Helper" is loaded from the Login control panel.

This is the 2nd iPod I have had now with the same results. What gives?

Can anyone help me here?
 
On a flat panel iMac, use the firewire port closest to the speaker jack for the iPod. The other one won't work. Why do I not yet understand. But it works. Perhaps there are different versions of firewire like powered/unpowered USB.
