ipod headphones and remote kill the ipod!

when i plug my new headphones and remote (i got 'em for christmas!) into my old 5gig ipod, the ipod shuts off instantly.
when i unplug it i get a low battery signal for a split second, then it restarts.

what's wrong?

Is the remote compatible with the old iPod?

on the apple website it says it's compatible with all ipod models.
