I'm sure there are threads about the iTunes 7 issue not recognizing the iPod in iTunes, but:

I recently changed the name of my computer, is there any reason why this may be causing the error in my case? I have attempted the soultions shown on the apple website for similar issues.

How does it "not recognize" it? Does the iPod mount? Does the "Do not Disconnect" thing come up? Is it mounted in Disk Utility?
 
normally when i plug the ipod into the computer, itunes will automatically open if it is not already open, and then begin updating files. the do not disconnect screen still shows on up on the ipod, but there is no sign of the ipod in itunes. it does not allow me to manually select update ipod because itunes can't find it. where there is usually an icon for the ipod in itunes, there is abyss.

howerver, the image mounts on the desktop and i can browse the files via finder.
