iPod not recognozed by other apps

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue so this may be the wrong forum.. but here it goes:

Cannot get other software such as Sinuti, Cog, Ipod2Mac to recognize my iPod being present. When I first plug in my iPod (3rd Gen classic) an icon for it comes up on my desktop, then as soon as iTunes starts up the icon disappears. I have noted that if I start one of these programs first (Ipod2Mac, Sinuti) then plug my iPod in (USB connection) it will recognize it present for a short time until iTunes starts then looses it. Would appreciate any suggestions to fix this.

Intel MacPro 2x dual core 2.66 MHz, 8 Gb ram, OS X 10.5.6, iPod 3 gen 80 Gb, iTunes 8.1.1 (10)
 
Uncheck "automatically open iTunes when this iPod is connected" or "automatically sync when this iPod is connected" in iTunes' preferences.

iTunes is automatically syncing your iPod, then unmounting the iPod at the end of the sync. Turning off automatic syncing may help, since the iPod won't unmount automatically at the end.
