iPod photo click wheel unresponsive

Hello,

My iPod photo has picked up the annoying habit of, while playing, becoming suddenly unresponsive to the scroll part of the click wheel. I can still click, and that does bring it back to life somewhat, but if I just scroll over it (as you would to turn the volume up) it does not sense your touch. Why is my iPod ignoring me? I have heard and am suspicious that it has something to do with static electricity generated somehow by it being in a case (it's in a Speck sticky rubber case). Have you encountered any solutions to this problem?

As always, thank you so much for your help -

It most likely is due to static electricity, which builds up notoriously on those rubber cases.

I found that placing my entire palm flat over the click wheel for a few moments then removing it clears this up -- I'm either "sucking" up the excess static electricity, or somehow generating a "calibrate" procedure since the entire click wheel is detecting contact.
