iPod problems

Ok, so I'm sitting here with my friends iPod. It's been plugged into the wall for about an hour now, and it still has the apple logo and says "iPod" according to him, this has been going on for a month. When I unplug it from the wall, nothing changes... until it runs out of battery. then it goes blank. whats wrong here?

have you tried re-setting the ipod?

occasionally, my ipod does some funky stuff.. volume not changing, getting stuck between menus (as its switching from artist--> song, etc..)

normally, when i reset the ipod, everything works fine. :)

yes, of course I have tried reseting. it works on my iPod too, and it usually works on this one. not this time though

HELP STILL NEEDED :(

I just took it to my mac store, the genius there said that he had seen nothing like it, (just stuck on the Apple symbol and letters) so he took it in back. Fianally, he tried resetting into firewire mode (resetting normally, then holding down the forward and backward buttons). Luckily, that worked. He then proceded to plug it into a computer at hand, and update the software. My iPod is now back to work. Ah... gotta love those mac stores.

I could have told you that! :)
Anyway, what he DIDN'T tell you (see, I'm smarter than him already!) is that there is 3rd way to reset your Pod. Just restart it normally then hold down left, right, AND the middle "Action" button as well. This will make the Pod enter diagnostic mode where you can test all the components to see what needs replacing. (since there was a remote test option, this fact along with the extra ring around the headphone port along with the empty compartment in the iPod case was how people knew that the iPod was originally going to come with a remote. :))

May I ask when you got your Pod? Only because I have heard that Apple made minor motherboard changes to the 5 GB model between November and March to address the higher-than-normal failure/problem rates.
