Ipod scratches already :(

Yesterday afternoon i prchased my first ipod, a 4th gen 20gig model. I love the controlls and the look an feel of the ipod but i have one small concern, it already has some scratches on the shiny metal on the back, now it has only been sitting on the carpet charging, in my hand or on my bed (while i was using is thismorning). This is just general use of an ipod and I would expect it not to be damaged by this

So is there an easy way to remove scratches?
I have heard people use tootpaste on it, how do i do that? just rub it onto it?
