ipod usb 2.0 interface -> usb interface?

the ipod would become that much more useful if that firewire -> usb converter would allow me to use the ipod as a usb hard drive as well as a firewire one. i would assume this is the case (isn't usb 2.0 backwards compatible?)

all the computers at the school have usb, not usb 2.0 or firewire
