is font smoothing a "feature"

The only thing I really dislike about OS X is the font smoothing. The menus in OS X look like my display is broken. The letters are unclear and fuzzy. In some apps, like Safari, all text is unclear.

If I run something in classic I get the OS 9 menus with sharp, crystal clear letters.

I cannot turn of font smoothing in the preference pane "general" and the settings I can choose seem to make no difference whatsoever.

Is there any way to costumise the menu font in OS X? If so, what font do you use?

Its annoying to me too. That and the horsey font size is like something for preschoolers or senior citizens.

If you're running Jaguar, TinkerTool is less effective. I tried using prefedit to override the smoothing up to 14 pt, but it didnt work either. I would like to a see a more tweakable interface overall.

defaults write 'Apple Global Domain' AppleAntiAliasingThreshold 72

Then log out and back in. Unless you use 120pt fonts a lot, that should do it.

Could you give me just a bit more detail on this. In what file do I change this and where do I find it?

Thanks!

Thanks, that did the trick.

Now for a way to reduce the font size in the menus and/or change the font.

defaults is a command.

Just type it into the terminal.

I set mine to 16, and the system feels quicker and cleaner now! Thanks!

I decided to put these brilliant little terminal commands in a textedit reference file, but where can I get more? I'd like to see where I can change the font sizes too...I mean whats up with the giant 16 point type in drop-down-menus?
