Is os9 being strangled into oblivion?

I have been a loyal user of imac for the past seven years. With the birth of the messiah of operating systems OSX, it seems the disciples of Apple, namely OS 9 ,8, 7, have been caste aside by all of cyberworld, to languish in an ocean of obscurity.
I currently use OS9.2 and feel like a leper in the the shadow of the reverand OSX and his distinguished wild feline offspring tiger, panther etc.
It seems nobody loves me anymore and the lack of software and hardware support are like dwindling embers in the once ferocious inferno that embraced this great operating system. A system that hailed it's inovator as a visionary, who now neglects his brainchild openly and provides no pension of support for the the elderly OS9 operating system.
The painful question now dawns : do I finally succumb to the almighty mother anti-hero of them all , the Lord of Windows?
Is it really worth upgrading to OSX?
Help me, for I am heamorraging faith in the forbidden fruit. The simple but complex Apple.

Poor and disillusioned

Well now, have you actually spent any time using OS 10+? You won't know if OS 10 is worth upgrading to unless you give it a good test drive.
I, for one, don't miss the frequent crashing and freezing that one experiences with OS 9. OS 10 is much more stable. And, there's lots more software available for OS 10. OS 9 is fast becoming somewhat of a dinosaur.
Windows!!!????? There's really no comparison. Only two operating systems exist. Garbage and Mac OS.
I think, if you don't move up to OS 10, you're really cheating yourself.
OS 9 was inovative in it's day, but it's now antiquated by the more advanced technology of OS 10. Panther, for me, is so stable and smooth. I'll keep using it, contentedly, until something better comes along. Tiger isn't there yet, though.

dear god, what imac are you using?

os 9 has some very nice touches, but on the whole, OSX has become this reverand thing because it really is that good. install panther as quickly as you can. don't bother with tiger.

this thread is in the wrong place for staters. second, os9.2.2 (which was the last update for 9 ) is to os10.4 as win 3.1 for workgroups is to win xp. you complaining about lack of support for os 9 is like windows users complaining about lack of support for win 3.1. of course apple is letting os 9 die, its over 5 yrs old! as soon as i learned how to install os x on my unsupported ppc7500, i bought 10.0 and did it. it was awsome. then i got 10.2 and installed it and never looked back. i can't remember the last time i even launched classic in os x , let alone boot into 9. then this year i finially saved enouph money to buy a used g4/466 tower, got 10.4 on it and am loving every minute of os x bliss. you need to upgrade to os x. being you have an older imac g3, i would sujest getting a retail copy of 10.2 jaguar from ebay, or macsales.com and use it. as far as software, the os comes with alot. i use that, ilife and appleworks. everything else i use is shareware/freeware. and with the sweet unix core, alot of old powerful unix apps are being, or have been, ported to os x. gimp, openoffice to name some.
but if you want to stay in os 9, this forum has a pretty good section on "Mac Classic System & Software" where you can post any problems you have, or software needs. there others that still use os 9 can let you know how to fix your problems and where to find software that you can use. there isn't much, if any new for os 9, but many os 9 versions of software made can be found, and they'll help you.
