Is the iPod photo worth buying?

I am going to be getting an iPod soon, I just recently got a job at a music store (sweet) with great pay (£5.70 per hour).

Should I get the iPod photo? I'd like to, but I want to know what people think about it (I know El has a 60GB version, any good?)

Thanks!

If it's your first iPod, my only warning would be that it'll be a bit heavy.

The regular 20GB iPod is just about the right weight to carry comfortably in a coat pocket.

The iPod mini and iPod shuffle are the perfect weight (i.e. you'll forget they're in your pocket).

if you have the money and won't have to take a hit elsewhere in your expenses then go for it.

sooner than later i can see all ipod models going colour screen - so you probably dont want to be left with a non-colour model.

we're already seeing ipod mini rivals with colour screens. so its a good idea to 'future-proof' yourself if you can!

it is more of a 'luxury' item thats for sure, so just weigh up your personal needs from the device.

How much music do you have? How many pictures do you have? I also have a 60 and love it. The battery time alone is worth it. Getting about 15 hours a charge of music playback. I had a demo model for a week when I was writing my extended review of it for a newspaper and also got plenty of time.
Let me know if you want a copy of the review where I addressed why you would want one and why you might not need one.

Get an iPod photo if any of the following are important (right now, who knows what the future will hold):
  • Transporting and displaying photos (for whatever reason)
  • Color screen
  • You have more than 20 GB of music (especially if you have more than 40)

Don't get it if:
  • You're on a budget
  • Weight is any sort of issue
  • You want a black iPod
  • You don't have a lot of music (under 4 GB, get a mini... under 20, get a 20 gigger)
The last one here is not a "rule" as such, because you might have other reasons for getting the photo than lots of music, or you might have a rapidly-expanding music collection. But it's still worth considering.

The fact that you have the extra room is also great if you want to carry more than photos or music. I have a little less than 8,000 songs, almost 1,000 photos, notes, cal and contacts (via iSync) and I also have my entire hard drive (minus my music collection) bootable (via CCC) on the iPod and I still have more than 5GB of space left.

The color screen is phenomenal. I compared it to a buddy's 40GB regular iPod, and it makes the thing look like it's 10 years old. That alone was worth it to me.

I've got 16GB of music, a few GB of photos, and a few GB of data on there. As others have said, it is thicker and heavier than all the other iPods, but if you got jeans with deep pockets, it's barely noticable. I only notice the weight when going down stairs and the thing is slightly jumping in my pocket.

The "oooh" and "aaah" factor when people see you using it is pretty cool, too, especially when the onlooker is someone with a "lesser" iPod... ;)

I don't use the photo capabilities that much... I've got a digital camera and take tons of pics, but the main reason I got the iPod was for music on my breaks at school.

One tip I can suggest is that if you've got a B&W G3 or a G4 PCI "Yikes!" machine, you should invest in a cheap FireWire PCI card. For some reason, the new iPods have problems with the built-in FireWire ports on those machines -- syncing multi-GBs of music the first few times took AGES -- over 3 1/2 hours for 14GB of music (I've since collected [ahem, purchased] 2GB more). I ran out to CompUSA and got a $20 FireWire card, and now it takes a little more than 30 minutes to sync my entire collection of music and photos from scratch.

I am also gonna recommend that you get a 512MB or 1GB iPod shuffle along with this -- if you're gonna spend $600 on the iPod photo, you may as well spend $700 and get a shuffle along with it. The reason is that you're not gonna wanna be rough with a $600 piece of equipment... I don't fall asleep listening to the photo for fear that I may scratch it, drop it or crush it in my sleep -- a shuffle would do much better in this situation.

Also, use the included belt clip case constantly. The screen and face of the iPod scratches very easily. Invest in a good case, like the iSkin evo2, immediately.

If I had the chance to do it all over again, I'd pick the 60GB photo every time over the cheaper, monochrome iPods, even though it carries a hefty premium price tag. It truly is amazing.

Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for the replies!

I have about 10GB of music, and 2GB of photos. BUT both are rapidly increasing as my photography work kicks off soon, and my music collection is just getting bigger.

This will be a long term iPod, I don't want to have to sell it when I have no more space and a rapidly expanding music collection. 40GB would be enough.

A copy of the review would be brilliant, thanks Randman.:)
