Is there an adapter to use a PC Card on a 12" Powerbook?

I am using an ATT Edge PC card for nationwide wireless internet on my 15" PB. I need to get a new PB and would prefer a 12", but it has no slot for the card. Does anybody have a suggestion for an external adapter that would be compatible with the 12" PB?

It is impossible to overview the whole market, but I would be very surprised if there was an external pcmcia "drive" for USB or FW. I never saw such a device but maybe someone in this forum did?!
However, if there is no such adapter I would recommend to pick a 15'' powerbook. You are not loosing much mobility and the price is definitely worth for the more hardware you get.

Thanks. At another location it says it's compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher. It's $29.....I'll give it a try.

It looks to me like a SD card reader that can either connect using pcmcia or usb. I do not believe it is designed to accept PCMCIA cards if that is that you are looking for.

This is where my tech knowledge gets really weak. I was hoping the same cradle that accepts the PC Card/adapter could be used for the GC82 card. What am I missing?

What that is is a PC Card that can read SD, CF, and other memory cards (like those used in most digital cameras). It is just a little unique in that it is both a PC Card (PCMCIA) and a USB device.

Put another way, it is a PC Card just like your AT&T Edge Card, not a PC Card host that you can put the Edge card in.

I don't think you will find a USB adapter that is a true PCMCIA host. I found a couple of card readers by googling for "usb to pcmcia" but no hosts. The distinction between a reader and a host is a reader can get stuff from storage devices (like pcmcia drives) but not run something like your edge card.

Ok, I found a host (it was about the 5-10 links down on the "usb to pcmcia" google). http://www.arstech.com/usbpcmcia.htm I know nothing about the product or how difficult it would be to get, but this is the type of adapter I believe you are looking for. Hopefully that will help narrow the kind if thing you need.

EDIT: Thought I would clarify. Arstech appears to be an industrial solution not a consumer one (i.e. they do not sell to end users but to companies like Belkin who then package and sell the product) So you probably won't be able to get one of those. It is just the only example I could find of what I think you need without spending an undue amount of time searching.

Here is the statement that gave me hope: "Not only it is perfectly compatible with any devices equipped with PCMCIA (PC Card) slot, but the USB cradle means that operability with desktop and laptop PCs are just as easy because it can also be used as a USB card reader/writer.".

I appreciate your input, and unless this changes your mind, probably won't bother with this. Here is another web site with a little more detail: http://www.amtron.com/adapter/upisdma.htm

I read that and am not positive myself, but will stick to my original statement. On the other hand it is only $29 so it might be worth a try.

I agree. Worst case somebody can use it for their digi photos.

Thanks for your help.

Your best bet if you want to use a 12" powerbook is, ditch teh EDGE card and just use internet access via a phone connected via USB cable. You can probably get a cheap phone for free that you can connect via USB. There are numberous websites around with directions on how to setup internet acces s thru USB to your cellphone.
