is there anyway to speed up browsing a remote comp?

Hey...i mount my computer at work (bahaha - realized how that sounded as i typed it) using afp on my home computer. everythign works great, b ut browsing the drive through a finder windo wis pretty slow. is there anyway to speed that up?
 
This has been a 'problem' since OSX was introduced... and, admittedly, it has gotten better, but why is it that when I'm using a third party program such as Photoshop, I can browse remote volumes faster then when I'm searching the same directories in the Finder?

It doesn't make sense.
 
1) Click on your desktop
2) Open a new Finder window (Command + n)
3) From the View pulldown, click View Options (Command + j)
4) Un-check Show icons checkbox

Please note, you must be in column view in order to see this check box.
